Art Holidays, Vacations and Tours

Art Holidays to suit everyone

An art vacation provides the time and freedom to enjoy your hobby without distractions. Perhaps you would just enjoy the synergy on an art holiday that comes from working in a group with like minded people.

It is possible to take an art holiday at any time, although in winter it may be necessary to travel to the sunshine.

There are many art vacations to choose from and most are suitable for a wide range of abilities from beginners to experienced artists.

What if I don't want tuition?

Check with the holiday provider, there is often opportunity to work independently. Alternatively, consider a self-catering option; many hotels offer special facilities, catering for the needs of travelling artists.

Try your hand at sculpture

Although the majority of art holidays are painting holidays, numerous artists organise art holidays throughout the world that reflect the diversity of the visual arts.

You could produce a sculpture on a holiday in Portugal or you might consider one of the numerous special interest holidays featuring textile art; check out workshops in the Caribbean and Wales.

Art Tours to admire and inspire

There are also many tour operators offering holidays to experience the art and culture of other people; look at this textile tour of Japan.

Don't forget Summer Schools

These provide the opportunity for a memorable vacation. The Courtauld Institute, London, is just one famous institution with a summer program suitable for art holidays. Some courses such as the New York State Summer School of the Arts have limited entry; but it is a special art vacation for those that are chosen.

Options for non-artistic partners

Art holidays are often located in pleasant and interesting areas. Many holiday providers cater for non-participating partners and there is usually a range of other activities available.

What equipment will I need?

This depends. Some holidays include all the equipment and materials needed but independent travellers clearly have to organise their own supplies. If that is the case remember you can order on-line and get goods delivered direct to your destination.

Try to travel light, there are excellent sketching cases and artist's backpacks available. If you must take an easel, take something designed to be portable.
A hardbound sketchbook, pen and/or pencil are essential; use your holiday to keep making visual notes. Digital cameras are handy but don't use one as an excuse to avoid drawing.

Seek the advice of the organisers.
