Surfersvillage Global Surf News, report that
The Mavericks Surf Contest will run again, commencing next month. Premiered in 1999 with the world's greatest big-wave legends mounting an assault on the pounding surf at Mavericks surf spot, a half-mile off the coast of Half Moon Bay, California. These '
detonating bombs' (as the waves have been labeled for their thunderous boom) became an instant sensation with the big-wave set and a true test of man versus nature.
While local surfer Darryl "Flea" Virostko emerged victorious in 1999 and in 2000, other participants have included such legends as Kelly Slater, Peter Mel and Jay Moriarity. 2004 was again won by Darryl "Flea" Virostko, see some
awesome competition pictures from Rob Vreeland.
The waiting period for the 2004/05 Maverick's Surf Contest will run from 1st December 2004 to 1st March 2005. Contest director Jeff Clark hopes to run it by 31 December 2004 if possible. Gary Linden and the big-wave judging panel are lined up, and organizers are hoping for good TV coverage and maybe a documentary similar to the 2003/04 film. Total prize money is $75,000 as follows; First: $25K, Second: $8K, Third: $6K, Fourth: $5K, Fifth: $4K, Sixth: $3K, & Seventh: $2K. The balance is to be distributed to the contestants evenly as an appearance fee.
