Six days of non-stop adrenaline
37 teams from around the world are competing in the Southern Traverse 2004.
The Southern Traverse is a six day non-stop adventure race for teams of four competing in a variety of disciplines such as mountain biking, kayaking, running and climbing . Navigation is a key component in the event and teams are provided with maps and instructions identifying checkpoints and transition areas throughout the course.
This year's event is 430km of often daunting territory on New Zealands South Island that is expected to challenge even the most hardened adventure racers.
Course organizers say that they have utilized the best of the region: a series of testing mountain stages, mountain biking through the extensive bush roads where careful navigation is paramount, and kayak stages on remote and wild rivers.
You can follow the fortunes of the competitors on the event web site and a number of television crews are also covering the event.
