The 1st International Biennial of Contemporary Chinese Art is to be held in Montpellier from June 17 to October 2, 2005. The southern French city is preparing to break down cultural walls by hosting an
unprecedented exhibition by contemporary Chinese artists.
Around 36 artists will compete in official selection for three prizes, with the top prize of 30,000 EUR. A third of the artists are already well-known, some living outside China, but a third have never before exhibited in the West and many are students exhibiting for the first time. There is also a high number of women artists.
