The
O'Neill Deep Blue Open, an Association of Surfing Professionals World Qualifying Series event, will be returning for the 5th consecutive year to the Maldives, 6th - 12th June 2005.
Tourism to the islands has recovered relatively quickly from the Xmas Tsunami but the United Nations predicts that the Maldives, one of the world's most fragile yet beautiful natural environments, will suffer the worst economic impact of any affected country. According to the Asian Development Bank, the total bill for reconstruction in the Maldives may top USD 406 million.
Tourism contributes over 30% of their GDP, and island communities are eager to welcome international tourists from around the world.
If you can't be there at the beginning of June, follow the event on the O'Neill Deep Blue web site, news, results, pics and some impressive video.
