Live8 logoThey want the concerts to be seen as part of a movement, with the immediate aim of influencing the G8 summit.

UK chancellor, Gordon Brown, is calling for a doubling of European aid by 2010 and 100% debt relief, as well as an end of many trade subsidies. However, the plan is facing opposition in the US and particularly from George W Bush; no surprises there then.

Bob Geldof and Midge Ure want up to a million people to attend an anti-poverty rally "The Long Walk to Justice" in Edinburgh on 6 July, coinciding with the G8 conference.
