Make Poverty History Taking the train to Edinburgh
Train bosses are advising anyone planning to travel to Edinburgh for the Make Poverty History march on July 2, the Stop the War Coalition rally on July 3 or the Edinburgh Live8 concert on July 6 to plan their journeys in advance.
Where possible additional carriages will be attached to trains travelling to Edinburgh but unprecedented crowds can be expected. Queuing systems are to be implemented at key stations, including Waverley, Haymarket, Glasgow Queen Street, Dundee, Stirling and Perth, to manage the large number of people expected and this will require car parks to be closed at several stations.
This weekend, Glastonbury lived up to its reputation for great music and mud. A sudden rain storm yesterday, in which two inches of rain fell in three hours on the site, resulted in a number of festival-goers waking up in their tents, floating in water on their inflatable mattresses. And today, mud-caked revellers demonstrated their collective eco-spirit when over 120,000 of them linked hands and with one voice joined Bob Geldof in shouting "Make Poverty History". All the stages at the huge festival stopped their performances to allow the demonstration to take place.
It is clear that people do care what action the G8 leaders take and it is also clear that while the co-ordinated Live8 concerts are going to be the biggest media event that the world has ever known, Live8 has raised awareness of the issues on a massive global scale and it is my bet that the week July 2 to July 6 is going to be a pretty significant social event.
