Some of the World's best and fastest windsurfers, kite boarders and yachtsmen, are assembling in Weymouth, England for the Weymouth Speed Week 2005, Saturday October 8th to October 14th.
Operating from the new
National Sailing Academy, which is the venue for the 2012 Olympics, the event has its sights set on the 50 knots barrier with entrants including record breaking windsurfers Bjorn Dunkerbeck and Dave White, and the high-tec
Sailrocket team;
100 knots is approximately 115 miles per hour so they will need to travel over the water at just under 30 meter per second.
The current World Sailing Speed Record is held by British Virgin Islands windsurfer Finian Maynard, who achieved a speed of 48.7 knots at St Maries de la Mer, France, in April this year. During the record breaking weekend, Dave White clocked 44.03 knots over the same course, to take the UK record.
Both Bjorn Dunkerbeck and Dave White are to lead a pre-event 'Master Class' on Friday 7th October,
meet at the Sailing Academy before 12:00.
