Congratulations to Lewis Pugh, who has become the first person to swim in the waters around the two poles.
I can understand hitting the surf at Bondi Beach for a Christmas dip but the tradition extends to the cold waters of the North, where groups indulge in what many would regard as a masochistic activity even with a wet suit.
However, the waters of the frozen lakes, used for the annual ice baths, would be positively balmy compared to the temperatures endured by Lewis when swimming in the polar seas.
