The 2006 Mardi Gras celebrates the 150th anniversary of the New Orleans' first formal parades and the city says that it sends a message to the world that the good times will continue to roll and New Orleans is being re-born after the devastation of
Hurricane Katrina . Over a million people were displaced by the storm and the death toll stands at about 1,400.
Organizers and city officials have said the bead-throwing show will go on, though obviously, in a scaled-down form.
