The modern sport of canoeing or paddling has a large and growing band of enthusiasts from around the world, it has an advantage in being an activity that can be enjoyed by young or old, male or female and also in being an activity that can take many, radically different, forms.
There are sea-kayakers, the extreme wild water fraternity, the two Olympic disciplines of flatwater racing and canoe slalom, and several other competition disciplines such as wild water racing, marathon racing, canoe polo, canoe sailing and even dragon boating, as well as the wide range of non-competitive canoe touring activities.
The sport is co-ordinated by the International Canoe Federation (ICF) and they provide an excellent calendar of international events. Some of the world championship events for 2006 are:
