Reigning ASP world champion Chelsea Georgeson (Australia), pictured left, scored the only perfect 10 of the women's Billabong Pro in Tahiti but couldn't find a decent wave in the final, finishing runner up to friend and rival Melanie Redman-Carr.
A change of wind direction in the final, spoilt the chances of a decent tube that Chelsea would surely have taken advantage of; however, make no mistake,
Melanie was fired up and has been consistantly surfing in a class that sets her apart from the pack. Now with three straight wins in a row for Redman-Carr and only another four events remaining on the women's tour, it is going to take Georgeson at her best, to deprive the 30-year-old Australian of the ASP crown for 2006.
Former six-time world champion Layne Beachley, also Australian, sits second on the ASP ratings, just ahead of Chelsea Georgeson but was left needing a combination score after Georgeson added her 10-point ride to a previous 8.0 for a total of 18.00 points out of 20.00 in their semifinal.
All the girls can now enjoy a three-month break; the next stop on the 2006 ASP Women?s World Tour is the
Billabong Pro Brazil, which runs from August 21-28, 2006.
Thanks to ASP for arranging the live video screening of the events and to Karen Wilson and Pierre Tostee, official ASP tour photographers for providing some memorable images.
