It looked as if Kelly Slater had notched up another victory on the ASP tour, putting him within a whisker of his eighth world title.
Slater was on fire in the quarter final and semi final heats of the Boost Mobile Pro at Trestles, USA, just surfing better and better as the tournament progressed. He was first of the starting blocks in the final against Australian, Bede Durbidge, scoring 3.67 of a fairly insignificant wave and 5 minutes later squeezing 6.67 out of another wave that Bede passed on.
Bede Durbidge then used his priority to take a wave on which he chalked up an 8.5 score, putting him in the lead and then Kelly passed on a wave that Bede used to score a 7.33; with 10 minutes left, placing Kelly in the position of needing a 9.16.
So it was that Bede took his first ASP tour final, taking out Andy Irons, local favourite Chris Ward and Taj Burrow.
I will try to post a full report with pictures in Beyond Boarders, later today.
