After several lay days, the legendary wave of Mundaka woke up today and the Billabong Pro, Mundaka, 2006 is finally underway.

The early rounds saw few surprises, with the notable exception of the sensational elimination of current ASP world number 6, Taylor Knox (USA) in round two, by Spanish wildcard Hodei Collazo. The biggest talking point was the no-show of Kelly Slater for his round one heat on the opening day; everyone thought that he was being ultra cool, extending his rest period with the confidence that he could move through to the finals with a round two victory. In fact, he explained, "That was basically just a bad judgment call, I thought they would only get about three heats done and somehow they got through to heat eight." However, when he finally made it to the water, the outcome was as scripted. Looking relaxed against his young opponent, fellow American Cory Arrambide, Kelly wound through some exciting backhand turns, tail sliding at will and turning in a comfortable 15.17 to 5.7 win.
The world title could therefore be decided in the next few days and you can
watch live. They are one hour ahead of GMT.
