After a tremendous performance by both finalists in one metre (three foot), Narrabeen beach-breaks, at the Billabong ASP Women's World Junior Championships, Nicola Atherton (AUS) has claimed victory over Anali Gomez from Peru. Atherton follows in the footsteps of her good friend and current world number four Jessi Miley-Dyer who claimed victory here last year. Both hail from the small Sydney beach of Bronte and Nicola has put down their upbringing and rivalry as a major factor behind their success.
Runner-up Gomez was no push-over, despite her relative public anonymity."Anali is an amazing surfer," said Atherton. "Not many people know about her, yet she is capable of throwing down some 9.0 rides? I?ve seen her go mental on her backhand before? she?s a fantastic surfer and a great friend."
Finishing in equal third was event favourite Stephanie Gilmore (AUS) and Hawaiian up and coming surfer Coco Ho. The men?s division round four will be completed today and tomorrow it is expected that the men's quarterfinals will hit the water at around 8am.
