WOMAD Summer School

WOMAD Summer School 2008 is a great opportunity for musicians and dancers to immerse themselves in the exhilarating, creative atmosphere associated with a WOMAD festival. A week full of workshops, master classes and jamming.

Situated in the idyllic grounds of England's Bath Spa University, the residential courses on offer include drum, percussion, guitar, songwriting, singing and dance. Each providing plenty of cross-cultural experience. The summer school runs 28 July through 1 August, 2008.

Now in its third year, the Sligo Live Festival will take place on the Irish holiday weekend of October 24th, 25th, 26th, 27th, 28th & 29th. Albannach

I came across this incredible Celtic pipes and drums band called Albannach. They are better described as a tribal drumming band but whatever label is used to describe their music, they deserve to have it prefixed with the adjective incredible, phenomenal or awesome. The video was posted by glamrockdj and is of Albannach playing at David R. Ross' Wedding March 2007.

Elgar's 150th

This year is the 150th anniversary of Edward Elgar's birth, June 2, 1857 and in celebration, the BBC are broadcasting a series of special programs.

They launch with a new film, 10 Best Elgar, on 27 April, in which Dame Janet Baker and Vernon Handley are among personalities suggesting their favourite works. Then radio 3 focuses its initial celebrations over a two-week period following the anniversary weekend in June.

Highlights include the composer's choral masterpieces performed by the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra and Sakari Oramo alongside performances of key works by the Philharmonia and Sir Andrew Davis.

Other speech programmes complement the music performances including, on radio 4, an exploration of one of the most famous pieces of English music ? Elgar's Enigma Variations.

MTV Australia Video Music Awards

MTV Australia Video Music Awards are being held at Sydney Olympic Park's Acer Arena next week, 29 April, 2007. 16 live performances are confirmed to date, including Canadian Punk rockers, Billy Talent and New Zealand pop-punk act, Goodnight Nurse.

Singer Justin Timberlake dominates the award hopefuls with six nominations, while punk/rock superstar Pink is in close contention with five nominations. Locals, Eskimo Joe and Wolfmother are head-to-head for best group, while Adelaide hip-hop masters Hilltop Hoods take on Eminem and Snoop Dogg in the best hip-hop video category.

Snoop Dogg will also be performing and will no doubt set the stage on fire, just two weeks after pleading guilty to weapons and drug charges in the US. UK fans were recently bitterly disappointed when he was forced to cancel a UK tour, after being refused entry into the country by the UK authorities.

Outsider win John Lennon Prize

A band from Lancashire, UK, has beaten musicians from around the world to win a prestigious songwriting contest, the annual international John Lennon Songwriting Contest.

The band called 'Outsider' were the overall winners of the pop category, with their song 'Understanding' and have won a $5,000 publishing contract with EMI and a run of 1,000 CDs. They have also been nominated for the Los Angeles Music Awards. Listen out for them.

Swanage Blues Festival 2007

Now in its seventh year and recognised as one of the UKs best Blues festivals, the 2007 Swanage Blues Festival will have the Dorset coastal resort rocking on Friday 2, Saturday 3 and Sunday 4 March. There is an open invitation to party; admission to all the venues is free.
Swanage is a lovely seaside town in Dorset on England's south coast. It sits in a picturesque bay, just along the coast from the National Trust's Studland Bay and enjoys wonderful views and walks. There are excellent pubs, restaurants and reasonably priced accommodation.
