Turtle Video

This delightful video of green sea turtles, with which we can wind down at the end of the week, has been provided by Jason (wreathian) who shot it while scuba diving off the eastern coast of Oahu, Hawaii. The area is known to the locals as Hawaii Kai and Jason says that although it is not a particularly great area for diving, it boasts several 'cleaning stations' where green sea turtles come to have their shells tidied up by shrimp and other small fish.

No soundtrack but wonderfully relaxing to watch these beautiful creatures in their own environment.

Georgia Sea Turtle Center

Midway between South Carolina and Florida, on the United States, Georgia coast, there is now the Georgia Sea Turtle Center. The center has an active educational program and during the summer, visitors can schedule nightly beach walks with staffers, to view these fascinating but endangered animals in the wild.

Part of the center also functions as a sea turtle hospital, which rescues and rehabilitates injured sea turtles. Since its opening last June, the Georgia sea turtle center has already treated 17 loggerhead turtles.

View a Google map of the Georgia Sea Turtle Center, which is located on Jekyll Island, Georgia 31527.

Great Turtle Race

I looked up Our Man in Hanoi who is now Our Man in Granada
and found that he has made an interesting post about the Great Turtle Race.

The turtle race starts in four days time from Costa Rica to the feeding grounds around the Galapagos Islands. You can pick a turtle, which are all tracked by satellite, and follow its progress. The idea of the race is to draw attention to the plight of the Leatherback Turtles which are in a race against time, to head off extinction.
